Part I
Describe five ways in which you think you have human capital that is truly unique
- Big picture logical problem solving- I seem to enjoy, and excel at seeing the big picture and identifying what needs to be done to approach problems as they exist in the big picture
- Innate sense of empathy- I feel as though I genuinly care about others' conditon. I want every person to achieve anything to their maximum potential
- Clutch- I thrive under pressure. I enjoy the feeling of accomplishments that are completed against stacked odds.
- Read people well-I like to think I have strong emotional intelligence when it comes to understanding others.
- Communicate-I enjoy being able to communicate with all sorts of people. I especially enjoy finding ways to communicate with those that others find challenging.
Part II
Interviews
Nick U. Nick and I have been friends since our early teens, that's more than twenty years. He seems to think that understanding what people are saying/feeling, even when they are being unclear, is one of my strongest social capital attributes. To me this would be a form of communication, one of the things I felt I excelled at.Melissa D. Melissa and I have been together for over 15 years, no one know me better. She feels as though my willingness to put others needs/wants before my own is something that stands out to her. I would like to think this is true, however, it may not be as true as what she feels she observes (I feel as though I may have to many moments of selfishness). I am going to have to explore this one some more.
Peter W. Pete was my boss for almost a decade, he has a very good understanding of me professionally. He says loyalty/work ethic are two of the strongest things I bring to the table. Honestly, this is something I pride myself on and I can't believe it didn't make it into my list above. I was raised that if you are honest and hard working it will be difficult for things not to go your way. I don't know if that statement is true one hundred percent of the time, but, I do like to live by it.
Part III
Reflection
I don't disagree with anything any of the interviewees have said. Although, Melissa's view of my selflessness may be a little biased in that I do try to put her before myself most of the time. I am surprised that the honesty/hard work theme was left off my original list. I would probably put that near the top and switch out the "read people well" item. I could have anticipated what my friend Nick was going to say, I always can. We used to joke that he was good at meeting people and making connections and I was good at keeping them around. We have defiantly had some successful business models based on that joke.
Sometimes it can be hard to see all the positive attributes in ourselves. We are prone to be our own biggest judges and are very critical. It was a good assignment to get an idea of how others view us and what they see us doing. Sometimes just hearing it from someone else can help you realize things about yourself. I agree that being able to read people is a good trait in business in general, but especially in being an entrepreneur. It will give you the opportunity of improving your business idea based on your consumers feedback, or lack there of.
ReplyDeleteBrett,
ReplyDeleteI really think you need to give yourself more credit! I think all of there responses show a really great deal of how much you mean to them. I know it is hard to see those things in yourself, I was surprised by the answers I received but its important to stay positive! I really liked all of your five human capitals and I share a couple of those with you. Overall, great post!
